Since 1997, the Harambee United Church of Christ has commemorated the MAAFA through workshops, lectures and, most widely known, a theatrical production. The theatrical production piece of our MAAFA begins with the re-enactment of the journey from vibrant communal life in Africa through the kidnapping and forced transplantation to America. The intended purpose is to examine the relationships between transplantation through the civil rights movement to a substantial current phenomenon.
2007 was a milestone for the MAAFA production as we celebrated 10 years of bringing performances to our communities that focused on both "gang" violence and "domestic" violence within our communities.
This year the Holistic Hospitality Community Development Corporation (HHCDC) proudly presents another spell binding MAFFA production focusing on AIDS/HIV awareness on July 24th, 25th & 26th 2008 at the Sunoco Theatre, Whitaker Center.
MAAFA is a Kiswahili word used to describe great calamity, catastrophe, tragedy or disaster. It is associated with the African Holocaust, specifically the tragic displacement, enslavement and destruction of tribal structure in Africa.
Our MAAFA production has touched the lives of over 10,000 people since its inception and continues to grow each year. This growth has brought the production from Harambee’s sanctuary to the Sunoco Theatre, Whitaker Center. As you can imagine with such growth, our financial needs have also grown.
We are in need of your support to assist us in making 2008's production a great success!
We thank you in advance for your generous contribution to support us in the following areas: Print & Media Advertisement, Cocktail Reception, Accommodations for Guest Speakers, and Monetary Donations.
